About Froggie

Sue Napier, has been a keen photographer since childhood and her deep-seated love of the natural world has always been her solace when those moments of calm and reconnection are needed. Having lived in Edinburgh for the vast majority of her life, Scotland is embedded in her soul and turning her lens on the ecosphere is her way of recording and sharing those moments of empathy and joy she gains from the world around her.

From the moment she could walk, Sue (aka ‘Froggie’ a childhood nickname which has stuck!) felt at home beneath wide skies and being outside in all weathers. Childhood days visiting her grandparents’ small holding were filled with quiet wonder, watching lambs and calves take their first shaky steps, and house martins stitching new homes beneath the eaves.

Fast forward a few years to 1985, when Sue spent six unforgettable months on the Isle of Rum, volunteering for the Red Deer Research Project. She still remembers the rhythm of the island: the hush before a calf’s first breath, the thunder of the autumn rut, an otter drifting by with a shellfish breakfast, a recently released sea eagle sweeping low overhead, and watching sunlit gannets diving against the dramatic dark clouds with a rainbow framing the scene.

Her love of the Pentlands began with early walks alongside her father and has never left her. Today, as a lifetime member of the Friends of the Pentlands, she still celebrates each birthday among those rolling hills, listening for cuckoos and curlews calling through the heathered air.

Photography

Sue’s first camera famously melted in the back seat of the family car during a (unusually!) sun-soaked holiday in Skye when she was seven, proof that her fascination with capturing the world’s beauty began early.

Now as an adult, Sue says that taking photographs has become a form of mindfulness: a gentle way to lose herself in the living landscape and record what she sees - in what is often - the unseen.

Recently described as an Advanced Amateur (industry-speak for a non-professional who produces gallery-quality and technically proficient work!), Sue has now been persuaded to develop and launch a range of high quality cards from her standout images, the number of which will gradually increase over time.
